Why was my company name rejected?
The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) may reject a company name for several reasons, with the most common being similarity to an existing name. A name might also be rejected if it includes restricted words. According to the CAC, the following rules apply:
- A name identical or too similar to an existing company or LLP won't be accepted.
- Names containing "Chamber of Commerce" are only allowed for companies limited by guarantee.
- A name that is misleading, undesirable, offensive, or against public policy will be rejected.
- Names conflicting with existing trademarks, business names, or body corporates are not allowed without consent.
- Names likely to mislead the public about the business's nationality, race, or religion will be denied.
- Names suggesting ties to institutions, foreign governments, or international organizations may be considered unsuitable.
- Any name that undermines public peace or national security will not be approved.
